New Zealand are to take on Bangladesh in the first of two Test matches when the two sides square off at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday, January 12.
The two Test matches represent the final leg of the tour for the visitors, who have not been able to win any of their six matches so far.
New Zealand beat Pakistan 2-0 at home in their last Test match series. The side had endured a series whitewash in a three-match Test series against India in September-October 2016. The Kiwis had beat Zimbabwe 2-0 prior to their two-match series in South Africa, which they lost 1-0 back in August last year.
Bangladesh have played just one Test series following the end of their participation at the ICC World T20 in India last year. The team hosted England in a two-match series in October 2016. After having lost the first Test by a margin of 22 runs at Chittagong, Bangladesh defeated England by a good 108 runs at Dhaka to draw the series.
The hosts have named a strong side for the Test match series. Ross Taylor is back in the side after spending time on the sidelines owing to an injury. Kane Williamson and Taylor will be the two lynchpins in the batting order for the hosts while Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner will be New Zealand’s best bets with the ball.
Bangladesh will be led by Mushfiqur Rahim in the first Test. Fast-bowler Mashrafe Mortaza has fractured his thumb and has been sent home as a result. Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan and Mehedi Hasan are the three key players for the visitors going into the first Test.
This contest will be the 12th Test match between these two sides. New Zealand have never lost against Bangladesh in this format. The hosts have won eight of the 11 previous contests while three have ended in drawn affairs.
Match starts at 11 am local time (10 pm GMT on January 11).
